Uniquely Duluth, the city's Indian Commission - Thu Aug 21 22:13:28 2008
I know we are supposed to have photos that are uniquely our city and while this isn't a landscape the event this women is participating in is uniquely Duluth. She is Dr. Joy Dorcher a medical doctor and university professor and the co-chairwoman of the Duluth American Indian Commission. Duluth is unique in that it is the only American City to have an American Indian Commission at the city level. Today the DAIC sponsored Feast and Forum to talk about the hopes and concerns of the American Indians living in and around Duluth. The event was held in the YWCA's Trepanier Auditorium at 202 West Second St. The YWCA is actually a historic building and will soon be converting into housing for American Indians as well as an American Indian Center.
The evening was part of the Duluth American Indian Commission’s ongoing efforts to reach out to the community. Part of the Commission’s mission is to develop recommendations to the City Council and City Administration to ensure that the American Indian community’s concerns are considered in the City’s decision and policy-making process.
The Duluth American Indian Commission was established by the City of Duluth by an ordinance passed in 2003. The 11 representatives on the Duluth American Indian Commission are appointed by the Mayor and include cultural and spiritual leaders, activists and other Indian Community advocates.
