I took this photo on one of the nicest days we have had this year. It was a beautiful evening. I don't know the name of the silos in the foreground. This is on the Port Terminal Road. In the background is the Blatnik or "High" Bridge. It is called the "High Bridge" because the large ships are able to go under it.

Okay, this photo isn't anything special, but I just wanted to get something posted. For those of you living elsewhere this is the color of the Duluth soil in the Hillside. And this shows you how far along our gardens are in the fouth week of June. I have been curious about the color of soil ever since I was made fun of in kindergarten for coloring in the dirt black in my crayon drawings. My family move from the Red River Valley of the Upper Midwest to northern Maine. I also remember as a young woman taking a trip to western North Dakota and returning to have a friend ask, "Hey, how did you get pink dirt on your car?'

Looking toward Canal Park, the Areil Lift Bridge is barely visible though the fog early this morning.

Pattison State Park is just a 10 miles south of Superior. It is very nice park about 1/2 hour away from Duluth. It contains Wisconsin's highest waterfall. It has a little lake named Interfalls Lake which is a great little lake to swim and cool off.

Each year the third weekend in June is very busy as many are participating in Grandmas' Marathon Duluth's African American population celebrates Juneteenth. I had only heard of Juneteenth on time before moving to Duluth. It is a celebration of freedom from slavery. It is also a time of family reunions, music, booths and a celebration of African American food. Sammie McClurly of the Duluth's African American Men's Group said they usually serve chicken and ribs. This year that food choice was too expensive so they served hamburgers and hot dogs.

I know this is supposed to be a blog about events which happened each day, but with two events happening on Saturday I just  couldn't see neglecting either one. I think it is significant that a small northern city has a Juneteenth celebration.

Grandma's Marathon is an Internationally know event that take place in Duluth the third Saturday in June. Duluth hotels were full. The downtown and Canal Park were crowded. These two young women dip pails in Miller Creek to get water for young trees. They are part of a group of young adults participating in a program to help the environment and gain employment skills named Green Duluth. On Friday afternoon they removed weeds around new trees which had been were planted to provide shade to protect the fish habitat and water quality. This particular location is right behind the back parking lot at  Miller Hill Mall, the big, main shopping mall in Duluth. The general public doesn't see this ravine and probably doesn't even know this area exists.

Green Duluth is sponsored by the City of Duluth Youth Employment Service and Community Action Duluth and provides green jobs for low-income youth ages 18–24.

• Duluth Youth Employment Service (Y.E.S. Duluth) has offered individualized employment programs to Duluth’s youth since 1986. 
• Community Action Duluth’s mission is to use innovative strategies that mobilize low-income people and the broader community to build assets that prevent poverty, create equality, and strengthen our social fabric. 
• The fieldworkers at Green Duluth are employed and paid by Duluth Youth Employment Service
• Community Action Duluth is a Worksite for Y.E.S. Duluth. 
• Both Y.E.S. Duluth and Community Action Duluth’s capacity to financially support the Green Duluth project is due directly to Federal Stimulus funds.       

 

The old Depot has been made into an art gallery. It is known as the Duluth Art Institue.
