Duluth was unseasonably warm on Friday night, which resulted in 20,000 people lining the streets of downtown and Canal Park to see the Christmas City of the North Parade. Many high school bands, clubs and businesses from around northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin joined in the pararde. Here the Hermantown High School marching band marches by the crowd at the corner of Lake Avenue and Superior Street. The people across the street in this photo are sitting and standing on the Minnesota Power Plaza. This corner is a popular spot for all kinds of events: rallies, welcome home parades, protester, Bike to Work Day; you name it, many public events gather happen here. At the bottom of the photo the bricks, which pave the majority of the Superior Street downtown, are evident.
A large tree is displayed at this plaza every year. This year the Holiday tree came from the home of Duluthian Valerie Tillman. It is a 50 foot Colorado Spruce and was lit for the first time just prior to the parade.Every year the rose bushes at the Duluth Rose Garden in Leif Erikson Park are protected with bags of leaves. Shrubs are wrapped with burlap.

Standing at Sixth Street a person can look down Twelfth
Avenue East all the way to Leif Erikson Park and Lake Superior. From
Sixth Street to Fourth Street is a little two-block section that is two-way
traffic. Going up the hill from here won't get you anywhere unless you are on
foot. There is a "secret" path at Sixth and one-half
Street. Pedestrians can take this wooded trail up to Seventh Street, but
vehicles have to go another block “west” to 11th Avenue or “east” to 13th
Avenue.
Duluth has many one-ways. They are remnants of an emergency
system to get the traffic flowing out of Duluth prior
to the arrival of Interstate 35. Many people think they are no longer needed.
(See Charrette)The one-ways can be confusing to visitors and new residents.
From the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Council: The one-way system became effective October 26, 1956 (pre-Interstate 35). Duluth Libray documentation from 1941 to 1968 ("DH" Duluth Herald) reviews the history of one-way streets. View the history of one-way streets in Duluth newspaper articles.
Today the November sun shone brightly and the sky was deep blue. This old building is in the city. It looks ancient. On the side of the left garage door is the remnant of an electrical conduit. So at one time it must have been wired for electricity, but that looks years ago too. No doubt electricity was NOT somebody's dream when this building was built. Most buildings or houses have a walkout basement. It is a two level garage, cars can drive out this level. The level above is uphill and has doors facing the opposite direction.
